यज्ञ विद्या · The knowledge of Yagya

Yagya is the art of offering

Not merely a fire ritual — a discipline of giving, gratitude and harmony with ऋत, the order of the cosmos.

01धातुMeaning

One root, three meanings

Sanskrit grammar traces यज्ञ to the root यज्. Panini’s Dhatupatha defines it in three words:

यज देवपूजासङ्गतिकरणदानेषु।

Panini, Dhatupatha

देवपूजा

Deva-puja

Worship of the divine — honouring the forces that sustain life.

सङ्गतिकरण

Sangatikaran

Coming together — uniting people, purpose and the cosmos.

दान

Daan

Giving — releasing what we hold, for the good of all.

02उद्देश्यPurpose

Why a yagya is performed

To keep the cosmos in balance

Vedic thought sees a reciprocal bond between humanity and the devas — the forces of nature. Yagya nourishes those forces, so that they in turn nourish life on earth.

To purify the environment

Ghee, medicinal herbs and grains offered into the fire, with the vibration of Vedic mantra, are traditionally held to cleanse the air of harmful microbes.

To loosen the ego

Every offering ends with इदं न मम — this is not mine. The practice cultivates detachment and the memory that everything belongs to the Divine.

For the welfare of all

Some yagyas are offered for rain, health or peace (kamya karma); the greatest are offered for the good of every being.

05आहुतिThe Offering

The five elements

A yagya is a meeting — of fire and earth, matter and mantra, the giver and the given. Select an element.

अग्नि

AgniThe fire

The first word of the Rigveda. Agni is the messenger between worlds — the mouth through which every offering reaches the Divine.

04प्रकारForms

The many forms of Yagya

Pancha Mahayagya — five yagyas of every day

The Shastras ask every householder to offer five yagyas daily. Only one of them needs a fire.

  • ब्रह्मयज्ञBrahma YagyaStudy and teaching of sacred knowledge.
  • देवयज्ञDeva YagyaOfferings into the sacred fire — havan and agnihotra.
  • पितृयज्ञPitri YagyaRemembrance of, and gratitude to, the ancestors.
  • भूतयज्ञBhuta YagyaFeeding animals, birds and all living beings.
  • मनुष्ययज्ञManushya YagyaHospitality and service to fellow human beings.

The Gita’s many fires

In Chapter 4, Krishna widens yagya far beyond the fire pit (4.28–4.33):

  • द्रव्य यज्ञDravya YagyaOffering wealth and material resources.
  • तपो यज्ञTapo YagyaAusterity and self-discipline.
  • योग यज्ञYoga YagyaSpiritual practice and yoga.
  • स्वाध्याय यज्ञSvadhyaya YagyaStudy and recitation of sacred texts.
  • ज्ञान यज्ञJnana YagyaThe offering of knowledge — praised above all (4.33).

Three kinds of offering

The Gita (17.11–13) judges a yagya by the heart that offers it:

  • सात्त्विकSattvicOffered as scripture directs, as a duty, without craving a reward.
  • राजसिकRajasicOffered for show, or with an eye on the fruit.
  • तामसिकTamasicOffered without faith, without mantra, without sharing food or giving dakshina.

07प्रकृतिNature

Yagya and the air we share

The Gita describes a cycle: action becomes yagya, yagya becomes rain, rain becomes food, food becomes life. It is an ecology written as a prayer.

Gurudev’s message is practical. Pollution has made our air hard to breathe; a home that holds a havan every week or fortnight takes part, in its small way, in setting that right.

Use dry, clean samidha and pure ghee. Never burn plastic, wet wood or chemical incense in the kund — they pollute rather than purify.

09प्रश्नFAQ

Questions, answered

What is a yagya?

A yagya (also yajna, havan or homa) is a Vedic act of offering. Ghee, herbs and grains are offered into a consecrated fire with mantras, in the spirit of इदं न मम — this is not mine.

Is a yagya the same as a havan?

Yagya is the wider idea: any sacred offering, outer or inner. Havan usually means the fire ceremony itself, especially a smaller one at home.

Can I perform a yagya at home?

Yes. A small copper or clay kund, dry samidha, cow ghee and havan samagri are enough. Gurudev encourages a havan at home every week or fortnight. The Yagya Diwas page has a step-by-step guide.

When is International Yagya Diwas?

Every year on 17 September. It was first observed in 2023 at the call of Yagya Putra, Shri Shri 1008 Hari Om Ji Maharaj; the fourth edition in 2026 was marked with a 1008-kund Mahayagya at Jind.

Who is Yagya Putra?

Yagya Putra is the name devotees give to Chakravarti Yagya Samrat Shri Shri 1008 Hari Om Ji Maharaj, head of the Tripura Peeth at Maa Tripura Sundari Dham, Manikoot Parvat, Rishikesh. He has led more than a hundred Mahayagyas across India under a sankalp of 108.

What does science say about havan smoke?

A 2007 study in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology found that burning havan samagri reduced airborne bacteria by more than 94% within an hour. Research at JLN Medical College, Ajmer, led to a patent for a havan samagri formulation.

What is the best time for a havan?

Sunrise and sunset are traditional — the times of Agnihotra — but any calm, clean hour with a settled mind is suitable.

How can I take part in a Mahayagya?

Follow Yagya Putra on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and X for announcements. At a Mahayagya, devotees can join as yajman, walk in the kalash yatra, or simply offer ahuti.
